team

Before each game or after team selection night usually on Thursdays, I used to

hold team talks and tactics where I would give my requirements for the team

Team Talk

Formation

We are playing 4:4: 2 (I usually always played this formation) with midfielders moving to cover centrally or break out wide, and everyone attacks and everyone defends, defensive corners we leave one attacker up field the rest work under the instructions of the goalkeeper and we are watching the ball not watching the player.

For attacking corners I want the opposite winger to stay wide in case the corner is over hit, central defenders can go forward. I want strong tackling fast cover and shooting on sight.

Goal-Keeper

Talk to the back four and organise all defensive matters, all corners every thing in the 6 yard area is yours, and you control the area, put a fullback on the goal line and be positive when calling for the ball.

Distribution long kicks up field are fine. I would sooner you push the ball over for a corner than try the spectacular save.

Full Backs

In defence goalkeeper is the boss, first five minutes watch your attacker a see which is the strongest leg, then work on keeping those players off of that leg, if in doubt get it out, throw in’s or corners we can manage.

Going forward overlapping down the wings when you can. But make sure you have cover.

Central

Defenders

In defence goalkeeper is the boss, solid headers wide and handsome, don’t mess about get the ball out of the danger area.

I want you watching the ball on all defensive corners and clear the ball with positive headers or clearances. Attacking one or both can go forward midfielders will cover for you but if we lose the ball back as fast as you can

Midfielders

You are the engine and the ball controllers, stay tight to any attacking play and look for wide passes towards the corner flags when possible, going forward happy to see you shoot on sight so be brave.

Talk to everyone and get fullbacks to come past when you see an opportunity. Marking should be tight and aggressive in midfield so move and cover.

Johnny Goodkick will take all attacking free kicks and corners as discussed in training.

Wingers

Stay wide as much as you can, work out the fullbacks weakest side and exploit it.

Only cut in if you see a gap or overlapping fullbacks are moving forward, otherwise wide and fast, you also need to help out in defence so make your first tackle strong.

Cover in defence but be aggressive in attack.

Forwards

Both keep changing sides do not hover and make sure you are holding your line and looking for the open gaps to run into or across their defensive back four.

Shoot on sight I don’t mind how many you miss as long as you are having a go.

Kick off with the wind or weather behind us

Positive talking and support

Pressure all the time and do not loose your shape.

Subs may be brought on for tactical reasons

Notes v's Date:

A rough guide

Test which side has the weakest defenders then exploit that

Pressing all the time pressure every opposition player

If we are winning 2:0 then keep pushing forward

Shoot on sight

Early crosses into the forwards

diamond

Most people think the playing area is a rectangle BUT if you imagine the pitch like a diamond you will see attacking down the middle the area gets more compressed and defenders can cover the area easily, the same applies to our defenders so I try to encourage playing from deep to wide and encourage play into spaces outside of the diamond.

Especially with the ladies I encouraged defender and midfield to play the ball into the corners
